How to cleanse crystals & gemstones

As part of my Crystal Awareness classes I discuss the many ways to energetically cleanse crystals and gemstones. Here are  the methods I use to clear crystals.

Why do we need to cleanse our crystals and gemstones?

Crystals and gemstones attract, magnify and hold energy.  We want to cleanse them of any unwanted energy. Energetically cleansing crystals removes any negative energy that the stone may have picked up and returns the crystal to its pure state.

When to cleanse a crystal or gemstone?

Crystals should be cleansed soon after you get one for the first time and after each time you use the stone for healing, either for yourself or healing for someone else.
Cleansing your stones is a good way to get to know them.

How to know if a stone needs cleansing?

This is something that you will come to sense.  Sometimes the stones visibly look dark and mucky or they may feel dull, heavy, cloudy.  Take time to observe your stones before and after you have cleansed them, see if you notice a brightness or sparkle once they have been cleansed both visually and energetically.

How to cleanse crystals & gemstones

There are many ways to clear a stone.

1. Soaking crystals in salt water.  Take a glass bowl add Sea salt, how much depends on how many stones you are cleaning and how big the bowl is, for a quart size bowl 1 Tablespoon is sufficeint.  Allow the stones to soak over night if possible.  Some stones like Selenite, Turquoise, Opal do not like to be soaked in salt water.  These softer stones will begin to dissolve in salt water, so be sure to know which stones can be placed in salt water.
2. Burry the stones in a bowl of sea salt
3. Smudging.  Use sage or incense such as frankincense, cedar or sandalwood.  Hold the stones under the smoke of the sage or incense.  Sage is an herb used for its purifying qualities.
4. Sound clearing, use crystal bowls, Tibetan bowls, Tuning forks, Gong.  Direct the vibration of the sound instrument towards the crystal. Tone the instrument for several minutes.
5. Moonlight and Sunlight.  You can use the light of both the moon and sun to cleanse your crystals.  I prefer to place my stones out under the full moon and leave them over night into the next day to charge with both moonlight, feminine energy and sunlight, masculine energy.
6. Bury them in the earth, either directly into the ground, be sure to mark your spot, or use a flower pot and potting soil.  Stones like to be returned to the earth for cleansing.
7. Running them under water, either by a stream or river, or for a very simple method when you are in a hurry, just hold your stones under cold running water from your faucet.
8. Cleansing meditation- Here is a powerful yet simple mediation to use to cleanse your stone.

Place your stone in your dominate hand.  Close your eyes.  Take a few deep breaths, begin to relax.  Feel the stone in your hand.
Now imagine a beam of pure white light coming from your 3d eye.  Allow the beam of while light to surround your crystal.  Flood your hand and the crystal with this beautiful pure white light.  See the crystal completely bathed in light. See your crystal glowing in the pure white light.  Once you have a sense of the crystal glowing in the light you can open your eyes and with a soft gazed look at your newly cleansed stone.

Be sure to experiment with all these different ways to cleanse gemstones and find the method that feels best to you.  Have fun with it!

    Hello,

I am wondering how long I should hold the crystals under the sage smoke and how exactly does it work. Thanks for helping (:

    Your friend,

    Jesa

  2. Debra says:

Great question Jesa. It really depends on you. If you think the crystals are in need of “deep” cleansing hold them over the smoke for a couple of minutes. Ususally it only takes a moment to pass the crystals through the smoke. Sage has a very purifying quality and the smoke releases any negative attachments that might be held in the crystal. Try it for yourself and see what you think.

I have just bought some crystals for my heart physically disease and also anxiety and negative energy. I just bought, morganite, aventurine, rhodocrosite, chrysoprase, black tourmaline, and charoite is it okay that I use these all together? can I have them in my pockets all the time? what do you recomend? should I wash them all together in salt water? I need help to feel better physically. please let me know in your opinion
    Thank You

  4. Sarah says:

I’m really glad joele asked those questions ^. I’ve been wondering about this myself after reading a book about space clearing which mentioned that you shouldn’t have different crystals mixed together in a bowl. Each one has a purpose and it’s own properties so they should be handled with care and in consideration of others.

  5. Debra says:

My experince has shown me that stones LOVE to be together, they work synergistically together, blending energies to benefit us.
It is always best to use your own intuition and never follow a “rule” as each situation differs. If you feel the stones would prefer to be cleansed alone, follow that. Some stones are soft and can get scratch if they touch harder stones like Quartz or Emerald. The softer stones don’t do well in salt water, they can disintegrate . It’s best to use smoke to clean soft stones like Selenite or Amber. I like using Palo Santo to cleanse my stones. You can find Palo Santo on my web site.http://www.spiralsoflight.com/gemstones-crystals-photo-gallery.html#palosanto. Thanks for the great questions. —- Debra

Hi, my sister gave me this bracelet with charms and crystals. I was wondering hiw to cleanse it with running water. How can i point the tip downwards when they are all in different shapes. Thanks

  7. Hi Umy,
Not to worry about the direction the crystal points are going. The water will flow all around the stones and purify them as needed.
    Thanks for your question.
    Namaste,
    Debra

  8. Charisse says:

I wanted to cleanse my stones tonight on the full moon. Unfortunately, we are experincing dense fog and freezing temperatures. Will the cleansing still work in these conditions where the moon rays will potentially not penetrate the fog and the crystals will be on ice?
Thank you for your advice :)

  9. Debra says:

    Charisse,

No worries. The moon light will get to your stones through the fog. Keep them indoors, by a window where the moon light will glow. The power and energy of the moon will penetrate through.
    Namaste,
    Debra

Hi few days back I bought a rose quartz bracelet. I energized it by soaking in sea salt water overnight. I wore it and after 2 days my rosé quartz bracelet broke. The stones are intact but the bracket broke into two halves. What does this mean? Did the crystal do its job of healing my heart?

  11. Debra says:

    Hi Seemasmehta,
It would be difficult to know exactly what the stones are trying to tell you, without knowing more about what is going on in your life. My experience tells me that when a stone breaks it is trying to get your attention, usually to slow down. So, listen for the message. Only you can really know for yourself. In the case with the bracelet, if the stones didn’t actually break, it just might mean its best for you to use the stones in a different way rather then wearing them. Try putting them under your pillow when you sleep. Thanks for reading my blog.—-Debra

  12. Barbara says:

How long do I leave my crystals in sea salt for cleansing? Thanks!

  13. Debra says:

    Barbara,
Allow the stones to soak over night if possible. Some stones like Selenite, Turquoise, Opal do not like to be soaked in salt water. These softer stones will begin to dissolve in salt water, so be sure to know which stones can be placed in salt water. I often leave my crystals in sea salt for only an hour or so. Experiment and find out what is right for you. Be sure to rinse with fresh water after a salt water soak. Thanks—Debra
